RaNaja Kennedy, Senior Community Engagement Coordinator, UPitt Clinical & Translational Science Institute
RaNaja leads efforts that foster trust between patients, families, providers, and research teams — ensuring that research and care are reciprocal, practical, and grounded in real-life experiences.
At the University of Pittsburgh CTSI, she has directed community engagement strategy across more than 1,200 research projects. By guiding feasibility reviews, embedding reciprocity into design, and strengthening retention, she helped increase participation from underrepresented groups by over 50% and expanded equity-focused approaches into national initiatives.
RaNaja also stays closely connected to the community — convening advisory boards, hosting public forums, and leading programs that elevate the voices of patients and caregivers. Representing CTSI at conferences and health events, she translates complex scientific concepts into clear, empathetic communication that fosters trust and participation.
RaNaja says what drives her is simple: when community voice is at the center, research becomes more feasible, retention improves, and outcomes deliver lasting impact.
